Last month, Claude told us our website had canonical tag issues. We checked. It was wrong — the canonicals were set correctly on every page. A week later, it claimed an ecommerce client had no schema markup. Also wrong. That site fires JSON-LD on every product page.
After 6 months running 50+ Claude Code SEO plugins across agency work and client audits, here’s our honest take on using Claude for SEO: it’s a useful assistant, not a replacement for one. Why does this happen? Claude often works from what it can fetch, not what Googlebot actually sees. It can miss elements injected by JavaScript, hidden behind auth walls, or served differently by CDN edge rules. It also pattern-matches against “what a broken site looks like” and can apply that pattern too aggressively.
These aren’t theoretical edge cases. They’re week-over-week occurrences. Every audit we run now gets a second pass by a human before any action. Claude’s 4.x generation sits notably above GPT-4o and well above the best-performing small models on grounded summarisation benchmarks — which tells you something about how much verification you still need, even on the better frontier models.
Trend analysis and pattern spotting across big exports. That’s where Claude shines for SEO work. When we paste 5,000 rows of Google Search Console data into a conversation and ask “which queries are bleeding impressions but holding rank?”, Claude answers in seconds. A junior analyst would take an afternoon.

Feed it context. That’s the single biggest lever. A naive prompt to Claude returns a naive answer. A prompt stacked with real data returns sharp, specific work.
